Our tribute to Hillers NHL career

Posted on Posted in Allgemein

After a lot of rumors around Jonas Hiller and his ending NHL career, there has been a decision made yesterday in Biel. The goaltender from the Calgary Flames will return to Switzerland next season and has signed a three year contract in Biel. This seems to be a great solution for the team from Bern and could be a great advantage in Biel for next season. We have rolled up Hillers 9 years in North America and have highlighted his success!

After playing for the HC Davos from 2004 until 2007 and winning the Swiss championship twice, Hiller got signed by the Anheim Ducks as  a free agent, without ever being drafted. Hiller than gave his debut in Anaheim on the 30th September in 2007 against the LA. Kings and defeated them while saveing 22 out of 23 shots! Hiller got a lot of confidence by the Ducks and got to play his first two seasons as a backup and in the 2009/10 season he got presented as starting goaltender for the Ducks, making him the first choice in goaltenders in Anaheim. In his second season as first goaltender for the Ducks, Hiller got honored to play in the NHL All-star game and got voted as the best goaltender of the All-star game 2010/11. Hiller made himself a name as a solid goaltender in the NHL, but due to health issues he gave the backups a chance in Anaheim to show themselves and Viktor Fasth then overtook his position in Anaheim and after the 13/14 season he got traded to the Flames in Calgary.
His start in Calgary was very promising, as he started off his first season with an average save percentage of 91,8% and was a big factor in bringing the Flames into the playoffs. But the post season wasn’t as wished for him, due to dropping performances and an average save percentage of 87,9%, the Swiss goaltender got taken out of play and got replaced by Karri Ramo as first goaltender. This forced him to search for new options out side the NHL, even though he would have liked to stay in the NHL! Yesterday his future got signed in Biel and with that a great player comes back to his origins to enrich our league with his saves! We have been reckoning with this and have already been writing on this subject a few weeks ago. Read it again!
