We are getting very near to the end of last season’s NLA playoffs, with the last series taking place in Lugano and Bern. In terms of hockey spectacle, the NLA final wasn’t exactly the most memorable, but still it remains Swiss icehockey history. Never before was it seen that a team qualifying last would win the championship in the end. Adding to that we have again collected our best memes from April 2016 and know what you should remember!

NLB champion 2016
After four victories by Ajoie against Rapperswil in the final series, the NLB champion was found. After finishing the regular season on the fifth rank, the team from the canton Jura fought its way threw the playoffs and won its first title since 1992!

SC Bern – Swiss Champion 2016
After a huge struggle during the regular season, the team of Lars Leuenberger made its way past the ZSC Lions and HC Davos. In the end they needed to face HC Lugano in the final series of the playoffs. The home advantage was on the side of Lugano, but after only one defeat against the team from the Tessin, the champion was found. The team of Leuenberger wrote Swiss icehockey history with their historical playoff performance.

Like in the playoffs
After the National League season had ended, icehockey continued for the Swiss national team. The preparations for the world championships were up next for Patrick Fischer, Felix Hollenstein and Reto von Arx. The Swiss national team didn’t preform to bad back then, but their opponents were rather easy in comparison to their actual competitors during the worlds. In the end of the Euro Hockey Challenge 2016, the Swiss had won five of its eight games even though it suffered from a lack of scoring goals!

Goodbye NHL
After 404 games played in the NHL with Annaheim and Calgary, Jonas Hiller decided to end his career in North America and returned back home. After struggling efforts with the Flames, he had to let his competitor Karri Ramo pass and was playing the back up role mostly. He therefore made the decision to return to Switzerland and had signed a contract with Biel and he has helped his team so far quite considerably.
